Farmers Union Insurance Company was established in 1945 to fill a gap in the market for the specialty of farm insurance. Through the years, the company has grown to offer all types of personal insurance products and is now expanding into the small commercial market. Our products are "homegrown" and distributed throughout the Midwest and Rocky Mountain regions by our 400 dedicated local agents.

Company History & Overview

In 1902, ten families founded National Farmers Union to advocate for fair market access for farmers and to protect the economic well-being and quality of life for family farmers and rural communities. Out of that mission, a little over forty years later, Farmers Union Insurance was formed to serve the insurance needs of rural America. Rooted in America's breadbasket, just outside Denver, Colorado, we continue to provide the very best in security and protection for our policyholders and continue to indirectly support the family farm advocacy work of National Farmers Union.

Farmers Union Insurance predominantly writes personal auto, farm auto, farmowners, homeowners and small commercial insurance in nine Midwestern states including North Dakota, Colorado, Montana, Minnesota, Kansas, Wyoming, Nebraska and Utah. Farmers Union Insurance has an exclusive relationship with the National Farmers Union, providing access to members through roughly 400 agencies.

In addition to autos, homes, businesses and farms, Farmers Union Insurance is also the leading writer in the country of rural telephone and cable companies. Our telecommunications business operates in 38 states and the District of Columbia. These specialized policies are written through exclusive account executives who have developed a thorough knowledge and understanding of their unique markets.

In 2019, Farmers Union Insurance was acquired by National General Holdings Corp., a specialty personal lines insurance holding company. National General traces its roots to 1939, and its member companies have a financial strength rating of A- (Excellent) from A.M. Best and an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. National General Insurance Group provides personal and commercial automobile, homeowners, umbrella, recreational vehicle, motorcycle, supplemental health, and other niche insurance products through a number of growing subsidiary companies and a network of more than 23,000 independent agents across the country.
