Our History
Back in the days of FDR, an organization formed by and promoting the interests of family farmers known as National Farmers Union founded the National Farmers Union Security Association, a life insurance company aimed at providing financial security for the nation's family farmers while earning much-needed income for National Farmers Union. The Security Association proved successful and was joined by a property and casualty company (National Farmers Union Automobile and Casualty Company) established by National Farmers Union in 1945. Both the life and casualty companies changed their names in 1950 to National Farmers Union Life Insurance Company and National Farmers Union Property and Casualty Company, respectively. Later (in 1968, to be exact), a third company providing non-preferred auto coverages - National Farmers Union Standard Insurance Company - joined the fold.
While National Farmers Union Life Insurance Company and National Farmers Union Standard Insurance Company have since been sold, our remaining company - National Farmers Union Property and Casualty Company continues to have as two of its principal purposes providing the very best in security and protection for our policyholders (mostly in rural America) as well as indirectly supporting the family farm advocacy work of National Farmers Union.
Farmers Union Insurance writes auto, small commercial, homeowners and farmowners insurance in nine Midwestern and Rocky Mountain states.
Farmers Union Insurance is also the leading writer in the country of rural telecommunications coverages. These specialized policies are written in over 30 states through largely exclusive account executives who have developed a thorough knowledge and understanding of their markets.
Farmers Union Insurance is headquartered in Greenwood Village (Denver), Colorado.
