Why would I need a renters insurance policy—doesn’t my landlord’s policy cover everything?
Everyone renting an apartment, house or mobile home should have a renters policy. Most policies owned by landlords provide NO coverage for tenant’s personal property. In addition, a renter’s policy will provide you with liability coverage in case someone is injured while visiting you. It would also protect you if a fire (such as a grease fire on a stove) damages the building.

What does a renters policy cover?
Provides personal property coverage, loss of use coverage, personal liability and medical payments coverage.
Four most common riders:
- Scheduled personal property—Increases limits on high value items such as jewelry, firearms, or collectibles, which are otherwise limited in coverage or causes of loss. This endorsement provides coverage for these items anywhere in the world and covers for “mysterious disappearance.”
- NFU Home guard—Provides coverage for sewer or water backup up to $5,000, lock replacement up to $500, and $2,000 limit on refrigerated property.
- NFU FinancialGuard—Identity Fraud expense coverage, mortgage extra expense coverage, Credit card, forgery or counterfeit money coverage.
- Replacement cost on personal property—pays replacement cost on personal property as long as limits are minimum of $20,000.
