Automobile Insurance is required by the state, but we find that many of our customers aren't familiar with what is required or what options they have when it comes to Auto Insurance.  To clarify some common questions and misunderstandings, here is a list of important Auto Insurance terms and coverages:

• Bodily Injury Liability (BI), in thousands - Although the state requires a minimum of 25/50 for bodily injury coverage (split into per person and per accident coverage totals), we do not recommend anything below 50/100 BI. Bodily injury is defined as permanent or severe harm incurred from a covered claim. This liability coverage is not for yourself, but damage done to another.
  
  
• Property Damage Liability (PD), in thousands - Although the state requires a minimum of 15 for property damage coverage, we do not recommend anything below 50 PD. Property damage would be the damage to the vehicle or a physical property. This liability coverage is not for yourself, but damage done to another.
  
  
• Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists (UM/UIM), in thousands - This is liability coverage in case someone who doesn’t currently have insurance causes an accident with you or someone who has insurance causes an accident with you, but does not have high enough limits to cover your liability claim. This would only cover a liability (or bodily injury) claim for someone in your car. These are sold together and are split into per person and per accident coverage totals. We also recommend that this coverage is equal to the amounts of your regular Bodily Injury Liability limits on your policy.
  
  
• Uninsured Motorists Property Damage (UMPD), in thousands - This is coverage for liability only vehicles and would cover physical damage to your car if the claim is someone else’s fault that doesn’t have auto insurance. This coverage cannot usually be on a car that has Collision coverage.
  
  
• Medical Payments - This would pay medical bills (up to the limit of coverage selected) from an accident for anyone in your car that doesn’t have a health insurance policy (or to pay for your deductible on your current health insurance policy).
  
  
• Accidental Death & Dismemberment, Per Person - This coverage is if the listed drivers were to either die or be dismembered from a covered auto accident and would pay up to the limit selected.
  
  
• Towing - This reimburses for any tow bill (including locksmith), despite reason for needing the tow, up to the limit selected, towed to the closest facility.
  
  
• Rental - This reimburses for renting a car, in the case of a covered claim (for example, an accident), up to the limit selected.
  
  
• Gap Insurance - In the case of a Total Loss on a full covered car that has a leinholder, the gap insurance would pay the difference of what is still owed on the car, sometimes capping at 125%.
  
  
• Custom/Additional Equipment - If you have any Additional Equipment, it has to be listed on the policy in order to be covered. Additional Equipment can include, but is not limited to: Stereo Equipment, including Speakers and/or DVD players; Running Boards, Bug shields; Captain Chairs; Tonneau Covers, Rollbars, Custom Bumpers; Camper Shell, T-tops, Sun roofs; Pinstripes; Performance-enhancing equipment.
